Supporting Associations

We have offered online courses to teachers, carers and parents of AVAC in Cameroon and were able to host a get-together session for parents, children and educational personnel about how to best help the children. we were also able to offer a means of transport fo the association to access families in remote places. We believe this will empower the association to work more more effectively.

Samy’s New Role as a Teaching Assistant

After completing a one-year supported internship programme with DFN Project SEARCH Greenwich and Brighter Futures, Samy has begun a part-time role as a teaching assistant with a dance organisation, supporting children with complex needs.

This opportunity highlights what is possible when we focus on ability and create open doors to inclusion. At Dare to Hope, we believe that meaningful work should be accessible to everyone. Samy’s journey is a powerful reminder that with the right support, people with learning disabilities can thrive in the workplace.

Honoured and Inspired: Reflections on the Unsung Heroes Exhibition in Greenwich

I recently had the incredible honour of being named one of the heroes at the Unsung Heroes Exhibition, hosted by Brighter Futures CIC at the Camouflage Café in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The exhibition, held in celebration of Black history and culture, was a deeply moving and humbling experience—not only for me personally, but also for the entire community it represents.

The event spotlighted individuals whose everyday acts of leadership, service, and perseverance often go unrecognised. To stand among these changemakers—educators, community builders, creatives, and advocates—was both surreal and profoundly meaningful.

Key Takeaways for the Professional Community:

🔹 Legacy is Built in the Everyday

Recognition reminded me that impactful work doesn’t always make headlines—it grows quietly in the background, through consistency, compassion, and commitment.

🔹 Representation Fuels Aspiration

By highlighting the stories of Black individuals shaping our borough, the exhibition reaffirmed the importance of visibility in inspiring future generations. When our stories are seen, our communities thrive.

🔹 Community Spaces Are Catalysts for Change

Brighter Futures CIC has created more than an event—they’ve cultivated a safe, creative space where cultural pride and dialogue can flourish. The Camouflage Café is a living example of what’s possible when community is at the heart of everything.

This experience served as a reminder that celebration isn’t just about looking back—it’s about moving forward with purpose. It was a call to keep going, keep building, and keep believing.

To be recognised among so many inspiring individuals is a moment I will treasure. I accept this honour on behalf of every person doing meaningful work behind the scenes—often unseen, but never without impact.

Let this be a reminder: your story matters, your voice matters, and your work is making a difference.

Championing Inclusive Employment at the London Legacy Conference

Attending the London Legacy Conference at the Guildhall today was an incredible opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions about supported internships and employment pathways for young people with disabilities.

Organized by the City of London Corporation, Internship Works, and many other key stakeholders, the event brought together professionals, policymakers, and advocates dedicated to making a difference.

As a mother of three children with learning disabilities, I had the privilege of sharing my lived experience—how supported internships have transformed my daughters’ futures and are now helping my son as he navigates his own internship journey. These programs are not just initiatives; they are lifelines that empower young people to gain confidence, skills, and independence.

It was encouraging to see ministers and MPs present, including the Minister for Social Security and Disability and the Minister for School Standards. Their presence highlights the growing commitment to inclusive employment, but there is still much work to be done.

Every opportunity like this is a chance to raise awareness, advocate for change, and ensure that no young person is left behind. As both a mother and an advocate, I remain committed to pushing for greater accessibility, understanding, and support in education and employment.

DFN PROJECT SEARCH ANNUAL CONFERENCE

“Exciting news! My daughter Kelly Tchangoum recently took part in a panel at the DFN Project SEARCH conference 2024 where she shared her journey through the program and the impact it’s had on her life. Since completing the program, Kelly has joined the People’s Parliament for People with Learning Disabilities, where she advocates for the rights and inclusion of individuals with learning disabilities. Her story is a powerful reminder of how supported employment can empower people to make meaningful contributions in their communities and beyond. We’re so proud to see her using her voice to inspire others!
Kelly spoke about the importance of supportive workplaces that allow individuals with disabilities the time and training needed to excel. Her journey—from a supported internship to her current role—demonstrates the power of inclusive employment.
As the panel wrapped up, Kelly shared a powerful takeaway: disability should not be a barrier to employment success. She emphasized that, with patient and supportive employers who offer training and time for adjustment, individuals with disabilities can excel in their roles. Reflecting on her journey—from a supported internship to her current role as an MP—Kelly thanked everyone for championing inclusive employment, reminding the audience that their support is essential in building opportunities for all.

Thank you to everyone who believes in creating opportunities for all.
